Key Principles from US Sailing
1. US Sailing note on Scoring a Long Series
In US Sailing's Rulebook (Racing Rules of Sailing, Appendix A), there is a note that says the standard scoring systems may be inappropriate for a long series.
US Sailing +2.
This is because, in a long series, not all boats may compete in all races, and fleet sizes may vary a lot from race to race. US Sailing +1.
Because of this, US Sailing provides alternative scoring systems for long series.
2. Alternative Scoring Systems In their document Scoring a Long Series, US Sailing describes two main alternative systems: US sailing +2
High-Point Percentage Scoring System.
Under this system, a boat's series score is based on the percentage of boats she beats in the races she sails. US Sailing.
It's analogous to a batting average in baseball: each time a boat races another, that's like an "at bat"; finishing ahead is a "hit."
Here’s how it will be implemented in Region 3 series scoring. Each skipper (based on skipper, not hull #, so you can borrow a hull at any event) will be scored on their best four regattas of the six series. You must attend a minimum of three of six regattas to be included in final standings. For example, if you raced all six, then you get two throw-out regattas. If you raced five, then one throw-out. If you raced four, then all four count. If you race three, then all three count and your fourth regatta will be scored as last place +1. For each race of a regatta that least negatively affects you (boats x races) that you did not attend (essentially as if you were there but DNF every race). Each individual race of the regattas you attend counts toward your series score.
For example: Gene Cochran scored 3,1,1,1 out of 8 boats at Jubilee. So, he had seen competitors x four races. He finished ahead of 26 out of 28 for a batting avg 0.929.
Top three finishers get a nice coffee mug with your boat on it.
Additional regattas not included in series scoring:
- Florida State Championship Rocket Regatta is April 11 & 12.
- National Championship with Gold/Silver/Spinnaker fleets at Pensacola, Florida, May 23 to 28.
