Keith & Jennifer Bennett Win Region 3 Championship

The headline tells the important thing – but of course there is a story behind the headline. Like a lot of the country this year the weather in Alabama has been very unpredictable. Virtually every weekend either one or the other day, or even both at times, the chance to go sailing did not exist. Except for one weekend – yep April 2nd and 3rd - the Region 3 Championship Regatta. BOTH days had zero rain! And wind! Well sort of – but hey the NoR scheduled three races on Saturday and that happened; and two more races on Sunday and that happened too! And even with all that is going on with gas costs and inflation, we had 5 racers enter in both Gold Fleet and Silver Fleet, from more than just the host sailing club! And Keith was challenged but won!

Awesome close races and close finishes meant that the scorer needed to know the details on resolving ties, for the top three in Gold Fleet and for all five places in Silver Fleet. Saturday started cool and cloudy but a decent light wind day. Until the second race that had to have a shorten course event. Heading back to the committee boat the winds picked up to the degree that a third and final race for the day was going to be the longer five leg, finish at the windward mark race. Before that start got going – more new winds! Back to a four-leg downwind finish in hopes the winds held out! They did.

On the way back in I heard “Yep a Crazy Ivan winds day” – replied “yep” and thought “what the heck does that mean – gotta Google that term”. It does exist! Seems it comes from a movie decades ago of a chase of a Russian sub (thus Ivan) and means – “any quick, sharp, radical and unexpected change in direction” (thus Crazy). And boy that was a perfect description of the Saturday winds. Ya don’t like this one – wait a few seconds and see how you like the all-new direction! Fun times!!

Sunday had nice sunshine and winds more consistent and two more closely competitive races. The results of race by race and shown in another section of the site. And shows close competition for the top three places in both fleets!

The regatta concluded with a Region 3 Annual meeting to determine the new Region 3 Commodore who will then work on the 2023 Region 3 Championship regatta location and date and all other things Region 3. That meeting lasted almost 2 minutes, ended with applause, and welcomed Rich Gailey from LMSA, Florida, as the new R3 Commodore! Thank you Rich! Outgoing Commodore Cline ended his term by teaming with crew, son Mark, to win R3 Silver Fleet, and as Gene Cochran so nicely said “Welcome to racing in Gold Fleet with me at the Nationals in June”! That’s the plan!
