Youth Sailing
Program
Our Next Generation
The Catalina 22 Board of Directors is
driving an initiative to encourage young sailors to become
involved in our Class. With your help, we want to position the
Catalina 22 Class as an organization that encourages younger
sailors to experience the joy of sailing, learn good boat
handling techniques, enjoy family oriented cruising, and develop
racing skills in a safe and fun environment. The benefit for
these young sailors is a fun opportunity to foster teamwork,
build character, and learn many other valuable life-long
lessons.
What can you do to help?
•
Invite young sailors in your family
or club to race with you and describe some of the basic rules of
racing that encourages good sportsmanship,
•
Encourage young sailors who have
sailed with you on a Catalina 22 cruise to write up an article
about the cruise for publication in the MainBrace
magazine,
•
If you have a Catalina 22 Fleet, and
your home sailing club has an active youth sailing program,
organize a youth racing day and let the young skippers take the
helm as you crew for them.
•
If you are organizing a Catalina 22
regatta, and if the local club has an active youth sailing
program, add an additional race or two to the regatta that
encourages young sailors to enjoy racing with the regatta
participants.
•
Submit pictures of young sailors
enjoying a Catalina 22 for publication in a future issue of
MainBrace magazine and our web site.
There
has also been discussion about including a youth-oriented race,
or series of races, into a future Catalina 22 National Regatta.
The Board is also developing an awards program that recognizes
exceptional youth sailing contributions.
With
your help, we are developing the foundation to attract the next
generation of sailors to our Class and watch them become future
regatta and cruise organizers, future National Champions, and
future leaders in our Association.
In an effort to broaden
our reach and attract new sailors to our class, this new program is
being launched to encourage participation by the youth. They are
the future of the association and must not be ignored. Young
Sailors between the ages of 10 and 17 qualify to participate in
the youth program
keep in mind that this
is a program to encourage participation by our young sailors.
Therefore participation requires membership in the Catalina 22
National Sailing Association either by the parent or the
individual youth.
